An inauguration ceremony for the National Technical Committee on 
Nanotechnology  of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC279) 
was held on June 20 in Beijing. Chairman of the National Standardization 
Committee Li Zhonghai unveiled the name plate of SAC/TC279 at the 
ceremony.

    The move is considered as the allround initiation of China's effort 
in nanotechnology standard development. The secretariat of SAC/TC279 
will be located at CASaffiliated National Center for Nanoscience and 
Nanotechnology (NANST). CAS Executive Vice President Bai Chunli, who is 
also NANST director, will chair the committee.

    "The country which completes the standardisation work first might 
greatly influence the future international standards in nanotechnology," 
Bai was quoted as saying in a recent interview.

    SAC/TC279 will be serve as the crosssector coordinating body for 
the purposes of drafting fundamental standards regarding nanotechnology, 
including terminology, methodology and safety in the fields of nanoscale 
measurements, materials, devices and scale biomedicine.
