Yanqing County Association for Science and Technology (AST) plans to launch a seminar in 
academic months this year. Experts from Beijing Geography Society and Zhang Miaodi, president 
of Beijing Associated University, and other experts from Beijing, took the initiative to contact 
Yanqing County AST and assembled in Yanqing discussing the preparatory affairs for the 
coming seminar.
    Yanqing County Bureau of Environmental Protection, small-town office, and association for 
science and technology attended the preparatory meeting. Wang Shuangshi, official of Environmental 
Protection Bureau of Yanqing County, made a general account of the wetland' s present situation 
and of the conceptions on wetland' s preservation, restoration and utilization.
    In addition, Zhang Miaodi put forward several suggestions concerning the wetland situation of 
Yanqing County:
1) Wetland is one of the most important components of Yanqing County's ecological environment, 
which is the basis for ecological diversity of Yanqing County, even the whole Beijing area, therefore, 
Yanqing County will set up a special organization for wetland preservation.
2) Wetland preservation, restoration and utilization should be launched after being well planned and 
with a clear aim. In a word, the government should try to be prudent in unfolding utilization and 
exploitation.
3) Beijing Union University will actively join in the International Seminar on Wetland and will 
definitely make great effort to it.
     Professor Wang from Beijing Geography Society, indicated that the purpose of this seminar has 
two aspects: firstly, to attract investment and human resources; secondly, to establish a wetland 
species gene pool in Yanqing County; thirdly, to discuss the solutions to the problems of wetland 
preservation and utilization.
